I love Shel Silverstein's poetry and am passing that love on to my children. Silverstein's poetry is always simple and to the point, but each poem always carries with it a certain statement on the world. This poem is no different, and that statement is one of the reasons I love this poem so much. Read it once, then, read it again. Read it out loud; sing it to yourself. Read it slowly, and then read it fast. Then, let it settle and see what is says to you. That, is how you read a Shel Silverstein poem, and why I love them. Enjoy!
God's Wheel by Shel Silverstein
GOD says to me with a kind
of smile, "Hey how would you like
to be God awhile And steer the world?"
"Okay," says I, "I'll give it a try.
Where do I set?
How much do I get?
What time is lunch?
When can I quit?"
"Gimme back that wheel," says GOD.
"I don't think you're quite ready YET."
