I am re-introducing an oldie but goodie... Tens. Tens was a theme I used a while back. It is a top ten list, if you will, of my favorite things.
Tonight's list will be my ten favorite winter memories from my twenty-six years living in Massachusetts. Here we go!
10. The snow! The picture in this post is a view of Clarksburg, Massachusetts from Route 2. This is a road I travelled all the time. I loved traveling along this road in the winter because of its beauty with the snow covered fields and the farms. And, at Christmas, everyone added lights and lots of decorations which made everything even more beautiful. Breathtaking.
9. The clothes! Winter time in Massachusetts meant a change in clothing. Growing up, I always had two sets of clothes: those for summer and those for winter. I loved my winter clothes.
8. Playing in the snow! Winter was an exciting time for me as a kid. I spent my winter building snow forts, digging snow tunnels and sliding. As I grew, my fun continued, but it shifted to playing football in the snow, skiing and more intense sliding. Playing in the snow was always fun.
7. No school! One of the best things about winter was the possibility of school being shut down for the day due to a snow storm. I had a system. At night I could predict if we were going to have school the next day by the number of times the plow truck went by before I fell asleep. If I heard that truck the right number of times I was excited for the next day.
6. Boot Hockey! One of my friends had a pond in front of his house that froze solid in the winter. We would shovel it off and build up the banks around the pond. Then, we would play boot hockey. Most of us did not have skates, but we did have boots with hard rubber souls, which worked just as well. We had some awesome games of boot hockey.
5. Dunkin Donuts! One of my favorite things to do was to walk to Dunkin Donuts after playing basketball and get a steaming cup of coffee and a donut while waiting for my ride. The colder it was outside the better the coffee and donut seemed to taste.
4. Basketball Season! I loved high school basketball season. I would often stay at my Aunt Mary's on Friday night so I could go to the basketball games. I had a friend that would go with me. I think we attended every game our senior year. It did not matter if the game was home, away, in a snow storm or in rain, we always went.
3. Baseball practice! Baseball season started at the end of winter. We would spend our first two or three weeks in the gym fielding ground balls and taking batting practice in the batting cage. Whether it was practice or tryouts, baseball always started at the end of winter.
2. Driving in the snow! When I first received my license I hated driving in the snow. We lived over 30 minutes away, and in the winter, the drive was up one mountain and down another. It seemed that every time I drove to the city there was a snow storm. After a year or so, I got the hang of driving in the snow and learned to love it.
1. Home! I thought our home was the most beautiful in the snow. We had a two story house with a nice lawn in front. In the winter, I loved the way our house looked and felt with the snow on the front lawn complimenting the snow on our roof. I loved driving into our driveway and seeing our house with snow all around it.
There you have it... my ten best memories from winters past. Enjoy!
